The Minni Minawi faction of the Sudan Liberation Army released five prisoners of the Sudan Armed Forces in North Darfur. Minawi’s forces handed over the war prisoners to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in an area close to the town of Thabit, ICRC disclosed in a statement today.Laurent Bernet, the ICRC delegate who supervised the handover, called the event “an emphatic reminder of the role of the ICRC as a neutral and impartial intermediary in times of armed conflict.”

Red Cross consulted with the soldiers before the handover to ensure that they were willing and also gave them an opportunity to contact their families by phone or via Red Cross message, to let them know that they had been released and were safe and well.
