The International Committee of the Red Cross yesterday facilitated the return of two members of the Sudanese armed forces to the government authorities in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State. The two soldiers had been held by the Sudan Liberation Army – Abdel Wahid. The ICRC delegation in Khartoum said in a statement that they agreed to transfer the prisoners on humanitarian grounds, purely in their role as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC said it does not participate in negotiations on the release of prisoners but can act as a liaison between the parties and assist with practical arrangements for the transfer of prisoners, if requested to do so.
