Two UN peacekeepers killed in ‘cowardly attack’ on South Darfur convoy

A Jordanian and a Senegalese UN peacekeeper have been killed in an armed ambush by unidentified assailants, on a Unamid convoy near Gireida, South Darfur, on Sunday. One assailant was killed and another was injured by Unamid peacekeepers in return fire, the UN stated.”The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemns in the strongest terms this cowardly attack on Unamid peacekeepers and expects the government of Sudan to swiftly bring to justice those responsible for this and previous attacks on Unamid,” UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said in a statement on Sunday. Two of the killers were detained by local security authorities, according to a Unamid statement on Monday. The media office of the Jordanian Public Security Directorate (PSD) said that Major Talal Rjoub, an engineer, was on duty when militants started shooting at a UN patrol in Darfur, killing Rjoub and a Senegalese member of the unit.Ban Ki-moon also called on the Sudanese government to act against the growing number of killings of UN peacekeepers in the Darfur region. According to the UN, 14 peacekeepers have been killed in Darfur over the past six months. A Rwandan peacekeeper has died after a Unamid convoy came under attack by unknown gunmen in North Darfur on 24 November. Three Senegalese peacekeepers were killed on 13 October in West Darfur. A Unamid military observer from Zambia died in an attack by armed men in El Fasher, North Darfur on 11 October.South Sudan Mission On 24 December, UN Security Council members unanimously voted to increase the troop strength of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by 5,500 troops and 423 police.
