Two killings, abductions in Central Darfur spark protest

Pro-government militiamen shot dead two people in Nierteti locality, Central Darfur, on Wednesday. The militiamen also abducted seven people. A 45-year-old farmer in East Jebel Marra was slain by gunmen on Friday. The murder of Yahya Abdu Mahmoud Mustafa and Ismael Haroun, and the abduction took place south-east of Kombo Ghabat. Seven people were still abducted on Thursday evening, including two women, of whom one is a minor. A third woman was released after the militiamen raped her, a relative of one of the abductees told Radio Dabanga. The five men are all students. “They were returning from the farms to their homes, when the pro-government militiamen intercepted them,” the relative said. He claimed the abductees are Mohamad Ali Bakhit, Abakar Abdallah Haroun, Eisa Ibrahim Ishaq, Ahmed Eisa Osman Sharafedin, and Yagoub Abdul Rahman. The fate of the abductees and the perpetrators remains unknown, the relative said. The killings, abduction, and the slowness of the local police to move to the scene has led to widespread disapproval and protests among the residents of Nierteti. Hundreds went to the scene of the incident on Friday morning, took the bodies of Yahya Mustafa and Ismail Haroun, and tried to move towards the police station. The protesters were forced to adjust their path towards the locality commissioner’s home, who instructed the present police forces to file a report of the incident, and transfer the bodies to the hospital.
