Two people are dead and 12 injured after clashes erupted between members of the Hausa and Rufaa tribes on Saturday in the flood-stricken El Dindir locality in eastern Sudan’s Sennar.

Governor Abdelkarim Mousa of Sennar said the incidents broke out because two young men allegedly harassed a girl in the village.

Locality authorities have moved Hausa families from the village to El Dindir town.

Sultan of the Hausa Ali Tahir asked the state government to impose security, arrest those who caused the incident, and bring them to justice.

Younis Ahmed, the head Nazir of the Rufaa tribe, confirmed that stability has returned to the village after intervention of police and native administrations on both sides to contain the incidents.

The material losses caused by large-scale burning and destruction have been estimated at millions of Sudanese Pounds.

Floods

Last week the government of Sennar state announced the collapse of 2,000 houses, the destruction of more than 6,000 acres of agricultural crops, the flooding of large tracts of horticulture and the closure of the eastern road linking the east with the west because of the flooding of El Dindir river.

A number of residents who spoke to Radio Dabanga have expressed concern that more houses could collapse because of the flood as El Dindir river has completely burst its banks.
