Ayman Mao, whose confrontational rap numbers have gained fame across Sudan for their criticism of the Al Bashir regime, flew into Khartoum from the USA on Thursday. After landing at Khartoum airport, Mao made straight for the mass sit-in outside the General Command of the Sudanese army in Khartoum, which has been sustained since April 6.

Mao was greeted by ecstatic crowds at the sit-in. Conservative estimates of the numbers say that at least a million, but possibly many more people had joined the sit-in my last night.

Mao’s catchy rap has captured Sudan’s youth culture, and his lyrics can be heard as slogans for the Sudanese uprising, and his rhythms are echoed in the chants at demonstrations.

Even young basic children pride themselves in being able to repeat his lyrics.
