Three people, including an eight-year-old child, have been shot dead during an attack by herders on Barkendi village in Dobo El Omda area in Darfur’s East Jebel Marra on Tuesday morning.

Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that a group of herders with seven Land Cruisers and some riding camels and horses attacked Barkendi village at 8 am on Tuesday.

Abdel Latif Yahya Haroun (8), Kaltoum Ibrahim Yahya (35), and Mohammed Juma Adam (45) died in the attack. Several villagers were injured, and others have gone missing, so that exact casualty numbers have yet to be ascertained.

Witnesses said the gunmen also stole property and livestock. They then blocked the road between Deribat and El Fasher, which stranded 15 commercial vehicles in Deribat.

A witness explained that the herders hold the villagers responsible for the death of a herder, and the theft of ‘hundreds of camels’ last Friday. Tuesday's attack on the village was a reprisal action.
