In early October, the students decided to suspend their studies in protest against the rise of the registration and tuition fees from SDG350 ($57) to SDG750 ($122). They have repeatedly stated that they cannot afford to pay the fees because of difficult living conditions. Many of them are displaced.

Last week, the administration of the El Fasher University summoned 13 students after mediation by a group of lecturers failed to resolve the crisis. The students are accused of inciting the protests, and may be dismissed.

One of the 13 students stressed to this station that they will continue their protest “until the university administration backs down from its decision to raise the fees”.
