Three children dead in North Darfur grenade blast

Three children were killed and two others wounded when a grenade exploded in Mellit locality on Wednesday.

Locality commissioner in Mellit, Abdelkarim Yousef Yagoub, informed Radio Dabanga about the incident in Kabani, east of Mellit. “The five children discovered the object and started playing with it,” he explained. “It soon exploded. Three of them died on the spot, while the two others were wounded.”

Years of conflict have left Darfur littered with potentially deadly explosives and munitions (UXO). Radio Dabanga appeals to listeners throughout Darfur (and elsewhere in our reception area) not to touch any ‘unexploded’ grenades or other ammunition found in the field. Mark its position clearly to alert others, and report it immediately to a camp elder, Unamid and/or the local police.
