Tense situation in Deleig, Central Darfur

The school, markets, and government offices in Deleig town, Wadi Salih locality in Central Darfur, remain closed, after displaced from the Deleig camp killed a militiaman in retaliation for the murder of a displaced mother and her son on Saturday. Militiamen gang raped a young woman of the Deleig camp for the displaced today. 12 other displaced were assaulted.   The situation in the area of Deleig town is still very tense after a group of militiamen shot dead a displaced woman and her son on their farmland on Saturday. The perpetrators were handed to the police of Deleig. When the police intended to release them, angry displaced killed the gunman who had shot the mother and her son. A sheikh of Deleig camp told Radio Dabanga that the people, particularly the residents of Deleig camp, are terrified of revenge attacks by the militiamen. “These Janjaweed threatened to torch the camp if the displaced pay no compensation for their dead brother. They said that they will attack any displaced person who leaves the camp.” “This morning a group of gunmen attacked a woman (17) when she was on her way from the camp to the farming area of Goubi. They raped her alternately,” he said. Seven women and four youngsters of Deleig camp were severely beaten and whipped while they were on their way to a funeral in the area of Bangaro, northwest of Deleig town, the camp sheikh added. “In addition, Halima Omar was assaulted near the camp. “The commissioner of Wadi Salih locality convened a meeting with the leaders of the Deleig camp today, to discuss the blood money demanded by the militiamen.
