Sudanese army planning ‘large operations’ against rebels: Minister

The Sudanese Minister of Defence, Abdelrahim Hussein, has accused the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) of planning attacks on “big cities” in order to abduct and assassinate members of the government. In a statement submitted to the Sudanese National Parliament on 12 November, Hussein warned that the SRF will now concentrate on “big cities in order to implement their strategy of eliminating government officials”. The Defence Minister also explained in the statement that the Sudanese Armed Forces plan “large military operations to resolve the insurgency in the Darfur and the Blue Nile and South Kordofan states for once and for all. At the moment we are moving our troops towards those areas. The coming period will be crucial for all rebel movements. We are very well prepared to destroy all elements of insurgency in the country.” Multiple sources from various regions have informed Radio Dabanga that between 8 and 11 November, they witnessed “hundreds of military vehicles loaded with arms and lorries with heavily armed soldiers moving on the road from Khartoum towards Kosti and El Obeid”. The large military convoys caused hour-long traffic jams. The SRF Foreign Relations Secretary, Yasir Arman, currently in Berlin being part of a SRF delegation visiting Europe, told Radio Dabanga that its forces have been informed of the SAF plans before. Commenting on the Sudanese Defence Minister’s statement, Arman also pointed to the role Khartoum is playing in the internal affairs of the Central African Republic (CAR).“Sameh Siddeeg, the former Sudanese Minister of State, has now become CAR’s de facto ruler by managing the civil war there and creating hatred between Muslims and Christians in the country”.   File photo: Camp for refugees from the CAR in Mukjar, West Darfur (Albert Gonzalez Farran/ Unamid) Related: Sudan’s Ministers announce ‘decisive campaign’ against armed movements (12 November 2013) SRF claim attack on two Sudanese army battalions in South Kordofan (12 November 2013) Sudanese NISS trained by Iranian Revolutionary Guards: dissident (11 November 2013) Sudan Revolutionary Front in Europe to ‘wake up’ international community (8 November 2013)
