Sudanese authorities officially closed the Mahmoud Mohamed Taha Centre in Omdurman on Wednesday.

An official of the Ministry of Culture and Information handed the management of the Mahmoud Mohamed Taha Centre the decision on the closure, stating that the Centre’s activities contravene with the provisions of the 1996 act, which regulates the activities of national cultural institutions.

On Sunday, officers of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) raided the Centre, in order to prevent the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the execution of Taha in Khartoum in 19985. They also prevented the start of a symposium on the Islamic thinker and reformer at El Ahfad University in Omdurman on the same day.
