South Sudanese mark 5th anniversary of Garang’s death

Thousands of people took to the streets of Juba in South Sudan on Friday to mark the fifth anniversary of the death of John Garang, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. The event drew a large crowd to the tomb of Garang, who died on the 30th of July 2005 in a helicopter crash as he returned from an official visit to Uganda, only a few days after he took up the post of First Vice President, in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. One of the mourners, Matyang Chirilo, told Radio Dabanga from Juba that on Garang’s memorial day Southerners also honoured the sons of the region who were killed during the civil war. The SPLM also planned to hold an event in the city square of Nyala, South Darfur, on Monday to revive the memory of Garang.
