South Darfuris slam reluctance to prosecute armed robbers

A merchant was shot dead by gunmen in South Darfur on Saturday. Two residents of the Dereig camp for the displaced in Nyala locality were injured in attacks by militiamen on the same day. Citizens of the region stressed the need to put an end to these practices. Multiple sources told Radio Dabanga that “government-backed militiamen” opened fire on the vehicle of merchant Hafiz Muhamed Osman while he was on his way from South Darfur’s capital of Nyala to Malam. He died instantly. The Janjaweed stole his money and mobile telephone, and fled, according to the sources. The citizens of the region sharply criticised the authorities for their reluctance in putting an end to these repeated attacks. They pointed out that there are “certain groups of armed robbers behind those incidents”. Dereig camp Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a Dereig camp sheikh reported that on Saturday militiamen tried to steal a donkey from Ahmed Haroun. When he stood up against them, they shot at him. Both his legs were hit. The sheikh added that Haroun’s neighbour, Abdullahi Yusif, was shot in his thigh when Janjaweed in two vehicles mounted with Dushka machineguns attacked a lorry en route from Nyala to El Salam camp for the displaced.
