Four detainees from Gireida have started a hunger strike in their detention centre in Nyala, South Darfur.

A relative of one of the detainees reported to Radio Dabanga that their health has started to deteriorate already. The security service detained the four men in Gireida, South Darfur, on 11 November after a demonstration took place against the violent and raiding militiamen in the area.

The men are Mohamed Mousa Daoud, Bahreldin Adam El Tom, Shamseldin Mohamed Haran and Sabir Abdallah Ahmed. “They have staged a hunger strike for not being taken to trial, nor being released,” the relative explained. “One of them is diabetic and suffers from hypotension.”

The demonstrations sparked when at least eight people were killed, while others went missing during clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Gireida one week ago. This incident followed days after several villages in Joghana were raided by gunmen. There have been conflicting reports about the number of dead and wounded in Joghana.
