SLM-AW in-fighting displaces thousands in Darfur’s East Jebel Marra

Internal conflicts within the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid El Nur (SLM-AW) caused thousands of people to flee the area of East Jebel Marra during the past three days. Five civilians were killed, dozens injured, and two of the largest markets in the area burned down. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, several residents of East Jebel Marra reported that clashes between members of the SLM-AW during the past three days have led to the killing of five civilians and the injury of dozens of others. “Thousands of people fled their houses in the areas of Bargo, Kakerguwa, and Simo. The markets of Bargo and Kakergowa were entirely plundered before they burned to ashes.” “About 3,000 fled towards Finga, about 1,500 towards Kabkabiya, and 800 in the direction of Tawila. They are in dire conditions, being scattered in the wilderness. Twenty-seven wounded were transferred to Finga, though there is no health centre there. The only health centre in the area, in Kakergowa, was entirely destroyed on Tuesday.” The residents from East Jebel Marra demanded from the warring parties within the SLM-AW to “listen to the voice of reason and stop fighting”. “If you continue in this way, you offer the National Congress Party troops the opportunity to enter the Jebel Marra area, and eliminate the remaining civilians and the movement itself.” The five civilians who were shot dead during the fighting are Maryam Juma Saleh (35), Aisha Musa Adam (37), Adam Abakar Yagoub (45), Abdel Hai Adam El Faki (55), and Hussein Yahya Mohamed (65).   File photo: A member of the SLM-AW  (Albert González Farran/Unamid)
