SLM-AW alleges killing 11 Mali militants during C. Darfur battle

The rebel group Sudan Liberation Movement-Abdel Wahid (SLM-AW) claims to have killed 11 Islamist militants from Mali during a battle against the Sudanese army in Derbat, Central Darfur on Thursday. SLM-AW military spokesman Mustafa Tambour added to Radio Dabanga that one Mali fighter was captured by the group after being “deeply wounded”. His name is Abu Ala al-Issawi. He assured questioning al-Issawi about the presence of other Islamist militants who fled the fighting in northern Mali and are allegedly stationed in Ain Siro in Kutum locality, North Darfur. Other Islamic groups are currently based in Jildu and Gorne, and others are moving between Khor Ramla and Nertiti accompanied by Central Reserve Forces (known as Abu Tira), Tambour affirmed. The spokesman urged the international community and the UN Security Council to monitor the movements of the Malian fighters in Darfur. “Over 100 killed” On Thursday, the SLM-AW told Radio Dabanga that after two days of battles against the Sudanese army and its militias near Golo, Central Darfur, over 100 were killed and dozens wounded on both sides. Mustafa Tambour said the rebels seized a military base in Derbat, West Jebel Marra, and withdrew from its military base in Golo, following seniors’ orders to transfer the battle from Darfur to Khartoum. Fighting in the West Jebel Marra region of Central Darfur reportedly broke out on 23 December, when the SLM-AW claimed to have captured the Jildu garrison, leaving the government with only two strongholds in the area. Jildu is an important junction that connects East and West Jebel Marra (prized for its fertile land), located near the central town of Golo.
