Six striking West Darfur medics resign

The Minister of Health of West Darfur state has accepted the resignation of six general practitioners. The West Darfur state health minister, Osama Adam, described the six doctors as the “agitators” of the strike that started a month ago. He also threatened to dismiss the striking medical interns if they would not resume work within 24 hours. On 13 October, 16 general practitioners working in the state-run hospitals handed their resignation to the Ministry of Health. They had embarked on a strike in protest against the dire conditions they have to work in, the lack of life-saving medicines, as well as the low allowances. The interns decided to strike too, in solidarity with the general practitioners. Doctor Abdelsalam Babikr, whose resignation was accepted, stressed to Radio Dabanga that the general practitioners keep to their standpoint, and will reject any attempt by the authorities to come back on their decision, “especially after the minister accepted the resignation of six of us”.   File photo: Saleh  Hamid (18) from Gocker, West Darfur, infected with Yellow Fever, is hospitalised in El Geneina Teaching Hospital, November 2012 (Albert González Farran/Unamid) Related:Doctors in Sennar, eastern Sudan, threaten strike (21 October 2014)16 West Darfur medics resign en masse (15 October 2014)Security summons striking West Darfur medics (24 September 2014)West Darfur doctors strike (24 September 2014)Mass resignation of medics in West Darfur (23 March 2014)
