Shelling kills three civilians, rebels claim victory in Darfur’s Jebel Marra

The Sudan Armed Forces shelled Deribat in East Jebel Marra on Friday afternoon, killing three women and injuring two babies in the process. A Darfur rebel movement has announced the killing of 37 members of the Sudanese army and pro-government militia in Deribat on Friday morning, as well as the seizure of a military base. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a witness reported that the government forces at a military garrison near Deribat shelled the northern part of the town at noon. They used heavy artillery. The attack led to the deaths of Maryam Suleiman Abakar (25 years old), Khadija Musa Saleh (32 years), and Aisha Harun Yahya (45 years). Two babies sustained injuries: Ishag, 7 months old, and one-year-old Kaltum Eisa. In addition, large tracts of farmland and pasture in the agricultural area north of Deribat burned to the ground. ‘Deribat military base seized’Meanwhile, the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid El Nur (SLM-AW), claimed to have killed 37 government forces and pro-government militiamen at Deribat early Friday morning. The military spokesman for the rebel SLM-AW, Mustafa Tambur, told Radio Dabanga that their forces attacked the Moro military base at 2 am. The battle lasted for half an hour.Besides the 37 casualties and several wounded on the army’s side, two rebel troops were killed, and five sustained injuries. Tambur claimed that they seized control of the Moro military base, as well as weapons, ammunition, and other supplies. The civilian population in East Jebel Marra has suffered from bombardments and shelling by the Sudanese Air Force and ground forces against the armed rebel groups for years, and a lack of access to aid organisations.
