Severe bread crisis in Sudan's Atbara

October 18 - 2019 ATBARA

People living in the town of Atbara in River Nile state are suffering again from bread shortages.

Several listeners complained to Radio Dabanga from Atbara that they have to queue in long lines and wait long periods of time in front of bakeries in order to obtain a few loaves of bread.

They accuse the owners of the bakeries and affiliates of the former regime, who still control the River Nile state Bakery Union, of manipulating the flour quotas.

Market traders in Atbara also criticise increased taxes. They threaten to strike and close their shops if the authorities do not solve that problem.

Radio Dabanga’s editorial independence means that we can continue to provide factual updates about political developments to Sudanese and international actors, educate people about how to avoid outbreaks of infectious diseases, and provide a window to the world for those in all corners of Sudan. Support Radio Dabanga for as little as €2.50, the equivalent of a cup of coffee.
