Seven staff of Al Midan paper arrested in Khartoum

Security authorities arrested seven journalists of the weekly newspaper Al Midan. A raid on the paper’s headquarters on Wednesday resulted in the arrests of 23 people, of whom 16 were later released.

A raid on the paper’s headquarters on Wednesday resulted in the arrests of 23 people, of whom 16 were later released.Iman Osman, editorial secretary of Al Midan, told Radio Dabanga that security men typically visit the newspaper’s office every day. She said that the seven newspaper staff who remain under arrest in an unknown location are: Kamal Karrar, Ibrahim Mirghani, Muhammad Rahma, Samer Salah Al Din, Khaled Tawfiq, and Mawi Abu Hashim.

Al Midan newspaper is affiliated with Sudan’s Communist Party.

Other journalists remaining under arrest in Sudan include Jaafar Sabki of Al Sahafa newspaper, who has been jailed since 3 November 2010.
