Security bans 14th journalist, confiscates Al Midan newspaper

Security authorities have now banned 14 Sudanese journalists from writing and publishing. Haider Almakashfy was permanently banned yesterday from publishing articles. The growing number of barred journalists coincided with authorities confiscating copies of Al Midan, the Communist Party’s daily newspaper on Sunday, after it had been printed. Sources said this was the 14th time in six months that Al Midan was confiscated at the printing press. They also said the security service has ordered newspaper editors not to write about the current security situation, president Bashir, the resignation of Abdullah Massar the former minister of information and the governor of Gedaref Karam Allah Abbas. Al Midan’s editor in chief told Radio Dabanga that ‘security is heavily targeting the media’ and called on ‘all journalists to stand against the attempts to quash a free press and rightly inform people about what is happening in their country.’
