S. Darfur camp: ‘Abu Tira’ shoots man, organizations departing

A displaced man was shot on his leg when members of the Central Reserve Forces (known as Abu Tira) invaded his shop in camp Dreige, South Darfur, on Sunday night. Meanwhile, two foreign aid organizations working at the site announced their imminent departure. Sources speaking to Radio Dabanga said Abu Tira forces shot Haroun Mohamed inside his shop, stole the money from his pocket and his mobile phone and fled. The shop owner was taken to a hospital, but risks losing his leg as a result of the severe wounds, the source added. Meanwhile, a Dubai-based organization announced it will leave Dreige following the completion of its mandate at the camp on Thursday, a camp’s representative told Radio Dabanga. This organization, he continued, supports the camp’s only health center.   The decision is frightening Dreige’s residents, considering the center receives between 100 and 200 patients each day, the source stressed. The departure of the Dubai-based organization coincides with the termination of another international agency’s work called Faiyalik Arahma which provides water, food and sanitation to the camp’s population. Faiyalik Arahma said it is no longer able to, alone, provide gasoline for the machines in the camp and to pay the wages of the workers operating and administrating it.    Its activities at the camp consume 12 barrels of gasoline per day and the salaries of its employees cost about 2.9 million Sudanese pounds per month.
