The Youth Council of Sudan’s West Kordofan has reported miscarriages, infections, distortion, childlessness, skin diseases, and allergies because of the random mining and production of petroleum in the region.

A statement issued by the Council's Administration of Health and Environmental Sanitation has revealed that the areas affected the most are the localities of El Firdous, Baleila, Moga, Nim, El Barasaya, Hijerat, Dafra, and El Gharya Heglig.

The statement demands a stop of the environmental degradation, and dismissal of Governor Abulgasim El Amin Baraka.

Toxins

Several toxic substances such as cyanide and mercury, are widely used in Sudan’s mines. Earlier this month, the residents of Kadugli in South Kordofan refused the establishment of a gold mining factory that uses cyanide in its processes, after the residents of Alleri refused the establishment of the same factory in their area.
