Registration of Darfur refugees completed in Chad’s Gaga camp

The UN refugee agency UNHCR and the National Committee for the Reception of Refugees has completed the registration of 384 new Darfuri refugees at the Gaga refugee camp in eastern Chad. El Sadig Yagoub, the correspondent of Radio Dabanga for the eastern Chad camps, reported that all the basic procedures for the registration of the new refugees have been completed. “The people fled from inter-tribal clashes in Central and West Darfur. They arrived at Gaga camp about three months ago, and have been severely suffering since then. Now, finally, they are entitled to food rations and health services.” On Thursday, Yahoub added, the USA-based HIAS charity organised a cultural festival for the sake of peaceful coexistence between Chadian citizens and Sudanese refugees. “The festival was attended by about three thousand Darfuri refugees and thousands of Chadian citizens. The refugees demanded farmlands so that they will be able to provide food for themselves and live in dignity. In this way, the tensions between them and Chadian citizens will be eased.” File photo: Gaga refugee camp in eastern Chad
