Rebels claim attack on SAF and militia in Darfur’s East Jebel Marra
The Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) announced that their troops launched an attack on a Sudanese Armed Forces battalion in the area of Nimra, East Jebel Marra on Sunday.
Mohamed Ahmed Yaqoub, the spokesman for the Liberation and Justice Movement, led by Ali Karbino (LJM-K) reported to Radio Dabanga that a combined force of LJM-K troops and forces of Minni Minawi’s Sudan Liberation Army (SLA-MM) and the Sudan Liberation Army-Abdel Wahid (SLM-AW) attacked a battalion consisting of 75 vehicles and four tanks at about 6pm on Sunday.
According to Yaqoub, dozens of Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) troops and government militias were killed and 10 SAF vehicles destroyed. The joint rebel troops seized 24 vehicles loaded with various weapons and continued to pursue “the government militias”.
Residents of the East Jebel Marra region who fled the battle, confirmed to Radio Dabanga that the battle started in the late afternoon and that troops were killed and injured on both sides. They heard shooting until late after sunset. They described the SAF troops as a large battalion, consisting of 70 vehicles, among them lorries loaded with various weapons and a number of tanks, which had left the military area of Tabit in the direction of Nimra.
The residents said that the SAF troops, in the period of two weeks during which they were stationed in the military area of Tabit, assaulted and robbed the civilians in the area of their possessions and livestock, raped a number of women and girls, and destroyed water wells.
