Protests after soccer supporter slain in northern Sudan

On Thursday and Friday, hundreds of people in Delgo in Northern State took to the streets in protest against the death of a football supporter by police bullets last week.
The demonstrators gathered near El Turaa market, and called for “a serious investigation into the killing of Abdelrahman Gurashi by policemen”, one of the protesters told Radio Dabanga.
During a match between Tera and Kajbar soccer teams in the stadium of Koka in Northern State on Wednesday, fighting broke out between the supporters. A number of people were wounded, including members of the riot police. The police were then ordered to disperse the crowd forcibly, and began shooting. Supporter Abdelrahman Gurashi was fatally hit.
Nubian community leaders immediately demanded an investigation into the incident.
A number of northern Sudanese football teams have decided to withdraw from the regional El Mahas competition.
