Protest against farm removal in Sudan’s Northern State

On Tuesday residents of Urbi area on the banks of the Nile between Ed Debba and Dongola in Sudan’s Northern State organised a march in protest against the government’s efforts to remove the agricultural cooperative project of Urbi.

Abdelmunim Mohamed Ali, the information secretary of the popular corporation for the protection of the lands of Urbi area told Radio Dabanga that yesterday afternoon the people gathered in the grand mosque in Urbi and headed towards the agricultural project to prove their ownership.

He said that the villagers have been cultivating the 230-acre project since 1949 before being stopped by a court order, accusing the judiciary and the land registrar of corruption and manipulation.

He accused the state government of selling agricultural land east Urbi with an area of 10,000 acres to Saudi investors.

He explained that Urbi which is inhabited by more than 5,000 people has no agricultural land after stopping them from planting the cooperative project.

The six-party Environmental Protection Committee of El Sawadra area in the Northern State called the villagers of the six villages for a mass rally on Wednesday to protest against the attempts to resume work at the gold mining factory that uses harmful cyanide.

Wael Hasan, the spokesman for the Committee said the purpose of the meeting is to make decisions on the developments in the factory case".

He pointed to the news circulated about the factory’s resumption of work in April, confirming that the factory’s uses of cyanide that threatens the human and the environment.

Post Sudan

On Tuesday the people of Hambokayib south of Port Sudan raised a memorandum to the Minister of Urban Planning in the Red Sea state in protest against the distribution of their agricultural lands as a residential plan.

Omar El Khalifa, one of the people of the area told Radio Dabanga that the ownership of the new residents did not comply with the foundations and controls of planning to change the purpose of agricultural land, not obtaining a conflict -free certificate and the consent of the owners of the lands who have suffered damage.

The people of the area called for the urgent intervention of the Minister of Urban Planning to contain the problem and maintain social security.

They stressed their total refusal to convert their agricultural land to a residential plan.
