Four pregnant women and two road accident victims have reportedly died in the maternity ward of Nyala hospital in the capital of South Darfur, as a night-time strike by doctors enters its tenth day.

The husband of one of the deceased women told Radio Dabanga that he requested a blood transfusion for his wife, who was bleeding profusely, but was surprised when the doctor ‘closed the door’ on him. His wife subsequently bled to death.

According the witness, two victims of a traffic accident who were brought to the hospital at night, died of their injuries because they could not be treated in time.

For the last ten days, doctors have refused to work at night in protest against the non-payment of supplements by the state Health Ministry.
