One killed in street robbery in Central Darfur capital

Bandits killed a student and wounded another after attempting to rob their mobile phones in Zalingei, Central Darfur, on Thursday night.
Adam Abaker (known as ‘Babujalo’) and Makawi Hassan Abdallah were in El Gezair neighbourhood when three armed men attacked them. The two students fought back when the gunmen tried to take their cellphones. The men then opened fire and killed Adam on the spot. Makawi Hassan was brought to the hospital in Zalingei for treatment.
An activist in the area told Radio Dabanga about the incident. He added that the bandits fired a hail of bullets, which triggered a number of security troops guarding banks to fire their machine guns into the air. Residents in the neighbourhood were terrified that night, according to the activist.
Central Darfur State Governor Ja’afar Abdelhakam imposed emergency laws across the state in the beginning of July, to “decisively deter” crimes and thefts. “The government will strike with an iron first, without any compromise on the matter,” the governor warned. Regular security forces are granted “all powers” to reduce the criminality rate.
