North Darfur camp residents assaulted

In two separate incidents, residents of Kassab camp for the displaced in North Darfur were assaulted on Saturday. Sheikh Taher Ismail of Kassab camp told Radio Dabanga that a group of armed herders assaulted three women from the camp when they were collecting firewood 3km north-east of the camp. The herders beat Haja Mohamedein Nil, Hawa Adam Babakar and Fatma Yahya Abdelrahman with whips and rifle butts, breaking Nil’s leg. Babakar and Abdelrahman were also seriously injured. The three women are currently receiving treatment at the camp. The sheikh said that the herders began the beating without any clear reason. At about 8pm on Saturday evening, three government-backed militiamen entered the camp. They went through the houses one by one, robbing and beating the inhabitants. When they suddenly opened fire at one of the houses, they hit the young Jafar Mohamed Idris inside his house. He died instantly. The sheikh added that the incidents were reported to the military police and Unamid. File photo
