No deal in Abyei talks

Talks between teams from North and South Sudan over the future of the Abyei region have failed. The negotiations were organized under the auspices of Ethiopia and the United States in Addis Ababa. The delegations from the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Party (SPLM) discussed for nine days an agreement. In a joint statement Tuesday, the two sides said that despite serious effort an agreement was not reached on the criteria of voters’ participation in the Abyei referendum. At issue is whether Misseriya Arabs, who migrate seasonally into Abyei, should be allowed to vote in the referendum.
