New Regional Security Commission for Darfur: Al Bashir

Sudan’s President Omar Al Bashir issued a decree on Thursday establishing a Regional Security Commission for Darfur. The commission will be headed by Dr Tijani Sese.Dr Sese is the chairman of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) and the head of the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), a rebel group from Darfur that signed a peace treaty with the Sudanese government in 2011.The commission will include the Governors of the five states of Darfur and the Commissioner of security arrangements. It will also include the secretaries and members of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the DRA, the Legal Counsellor of the DRA, and the members of the security committees of the states.The new Regional Security Commission for Darfur will be responsible for maintaining security in the province “without prejudice to the exclusive powers of the security committees in Darfur States”.File photo: President Omar Al Bashir (L) Dr Tijani Sese
