‘Militias kill 14 in one month’ in Nyala vicinity, South Darfur

A resident from El Salam camp in Nyala, South Darfur, was killed and another injured when pro-government militants opened fire on the two men in the vicinity of the camp. After shooting at the men, the militants looted over 100 sheep. The militants arrived on horses and camels and attacked the two men after sunset as they were on their way back to the camp, one of the camp’s sheikhs told Radio Dabanga. He added that the same group of militants opened fire on two other displaced men on Friday. Both were severely injured in the attack. The militants looted 75 lambs in this incident.Moreover, the sheikh affirmed that the number of displaced killed by pro-government militia since 18 April has reached 14 and the number of injured victims has reached 27. “These attacks happen in full view of both the police and UNAMID”, the sheikh claimed. He explained that the camp’s sheikhs met with the police, UNAMID and a representative of the Humanitarian Aid Commission on Thursday and demanded them to provide security. The sheikh claims that the number of policemen stationed at the camp are “very few” and “not capable of providing protection”. The UNAMID troops stationed in the camp are few in numbers as well and their mandate is limited to registering reports of incidents only, the sheikh added.The camp’s sheikhs presented a memorandum demanding urgent provision of security, food and water in addition to toilets, as the situation in the camp is deteriorating.File photo
