Militiamen rape two displaced girls in North Darfur

Pro-government militiamen raped two displaced girls from Kassab camp who were collecting firewood in Kutum locality, North Darfur, on Wednesday. One of the girls was a minor. An activist in Kassab camp told Radio Dabanga that the three militia members, riding on camels and in Abu Tira uniforms, attacked four displaced women on their way to collect firewood. “One of the elements separated two of the women, one of whom was pregnant and the other carrying her baby, at gunpoint. Then the other two men took the 14-year old and 20-year old girls and tried to rape them.” The two girls tried to resist, after which the men beat them with their rifles’ butts. Then the three militiamen raped them in turns for about eight hours. Afterwards, one of the women managed to reach the Kassab camp, and told the people what had happened. A rescue team from the camp arrived at the scene and found the two girls in a bad condition. “Especially the minor was severely injured and tired”, the activist told. The victims were taken to the hospital in Kassab for treatment. The people have reported the case to Unamid and to the camp’s military police forces, where they had to pay 20 SDG ($3.50) as a fee. “However, the police did not move to pursue the perpetrators.” File photo: A girl and a woman carry firewood and belongings in Kassab camp, North Darfur (Albert González Farran / Unamid)Related: Girl gang-raped for eight hours in North Darfur (5 February 2014)
