The government has sent military reinforcements southward from Nyala, according to sources in the South Darfur capital. The sources report that the military yesterday headed toward the areas of Birkeh Towleh and Donki Derissa, where the Justice and Equality Movement was believed to be based. The sources also said that airplanes were flying during the day yesterday at low altitudes over the city of Nyala. Radio Dabanga was nat able not obtain independent comment on the news.
There were multiple clashes in recent days between the military and what seem to be different convoys of JEM fighters in Darfur and Kordofan. The Sudanese armed forces announced Sunday that it had destroyed the forces of the Justice and Equality Movement at Boba and Furawiya in North Darfur. The army spokesman said it forced the Justice and Equality Movement to flee.
On the other hand, Abubakr Hamid Nur, JEM Secretary for Management and Administration, announced Sunday that the rebels captured tens of soldiers and seized military equipment and food supplies after the defeat of a government convoy in the mentioned region.
In a written statement dated yesterday, JEM Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs Suleiman Jamous named 23 prisoners from various military and paramilitary units.
