A massive fire broke out in El Malha market, in Darfur's most northern locality, on Friday. About one hundred shops were destroyed, merchants and witnesses report.

A witness told Radio Dabanga that the fire broke out in the afternoon in the southwestern part of the market of El Malha. It lasted until about one hour. Dozens of shops burned down to the ground. Among the shops were boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. The source reported no casualties.

“Residents, who threw sand and water on the flames, were unable to extinguish the fire,” he said. “The losses”, he estimated, “are high: Millions of Sudanese pounds.”
