Ma’aliya, Hamar clash in East Darfur and West Kordofan

At least 50 people were killed and wounded in clashes between Ma’aliya and Hamar tribesmen in East Darfur and West Kordofan on Friday and Saturday. On Friday afternoon, fierce fighting erupted between Ma’aliya and Hamar tribesmen in the area of Shag Hiraf, 58km northeast of Adila. “In the attack by the Hamar, seven Ma’aliya tribesmen were killed, one was kidnapped, livestock was looted, and several villages burned down,” a resident from the area reported to Radio Dabanga. In response, Ma’aliya attacked Hamar in the area of Um Deibun in West Kordofan on Saturday morning. The fighting led to the death of 39 Hamar tribesmen, and the injury of others. Seven Ma’aliya were wounded. Speaking to the press on Sunday, the Commissioner of El Udaya locality in West Kordofan told that 18 people were killed and 20 seriously injured in violent clashes between Hamar and Ma’aliya tribesmen in the area of Khamsat on Saturday. He accused “certain elements” of attempting to “polarise views and opinions” before the reconciliation conference between the two tribes takes place, coming Tuesday. The Commissioner called upon the leaders of both tribes to “listen to the voice of reason and contain the conflict”.
