Local official wounded in roadside robbery in West Darfur

The commissioner of Azum Locality in West Darfur, Abu Al Gasim Mohamed Sowar, was wounded in a roadside attack. After attending meetings in the state capital, the commissioner on his way back to his locality. According to a source in El Geneina, unknown assailants had stopped a commercial truck on the road near Habila Kanari east of El Geneina. They were in the process of looting the truck when the commissioner’s vehicle appeared. The gunmen opened fire on the vehicle, injuring the commissioner in his hand.

One of the commisioner’s bodyguards was wounded in the stomach and the hand. His injuries were described as serious. The omda of Shalaya in western Darfur, Abdelrahman Mohamed Abdullah, was also injured.

The gunmen seized a bag belonging to the commissioner, which contained large amounts of money. They also looted mobile phones and other possessions of the passengers. The commissioner and other wounded were transferred to a medical clinic in El Geneina for treatment.
