Lack of security reported in S. Darfur road

Residents of El-Salam locality, South Darfur, strongly condemned the continued looting and lack of security they have been experiencing on the Gussa Jummet-Nyala road, they told Radio Dabanga on Thursday, 6 December. The problems are worse on Saturdays, especially around the Khor Jaish area, where armed bandits are ‘a constant presence’ every weekend, a resident pointed out. He explained this is because of the large weekly Mirwa market, which takes place in the area on Saturdays, attracting citizens from several surrounding villages. According to the source, last week bandits ambushed and looted passengers driving four cars, adding the incident happened half a kilometer from where the police was situated.  The witness stressed that if citizens guard the area themselves, ‘entities will then notify the government’ that they are rebels and they will be beaten by its forces. Therefore, he continued, there is nothing locals can do to stop these series of incidents from happening on this ‘important’ road. Residents demanded the government’s immediate intervention to protect its citizens and completely secure the road.Radio Dabanga file photo
