Kutum commissioner survives murder attempt

According to eye witnesses the commissioner of Kutum locality, Ahmed Adam Abu, survived an assassination attempt around Kutum, North Darfur on Tuesday, 4 September. Sources said Abu and four companions were ambushed by a pro-government militia. Onlookers reported Abu was unharmed but the four men traveling with him got injured and were taken to Kutum hospital for treatment. They told Radio Dabanga Abu’s convoy was ambushed when traveling back from a funeral in Hiled Bashar, north Kutum. Onlookers also said that Abu’s guards exchanged fire with the militia, numbered between five and seven, who managed to escape. The injured victims include the President of the National Congress Party (NCP) in Kutum locality, Abubakar Adam Mohamed Hussein, known as Abibkora; Abu’s office manager, Tariq Bakheet; and Abu’s driver and body guard. Two policemen dead According to different sources, pro-government militia killed two policemen at the Kutum market, about one hour before the commissioner’s ambush took place. Onlookers reported that the militia was shopping at the market and then opened fire against the policemen. They said Abdul Majeed Issa died at the scene and his colleague, known as Qafour, died at the Kutum hospital after being submitted to a surgery to treat the wounds. Three border guards killed Sources told Radio Dabanga that three border guards were shot dead by the police just moments after the incident at the Kutum market. They added this happened near the police headquarters in Kutum. Eye witnesses said that four border guards were driving a Land Cruiser Prado when the police opened fire against them. They said three border guards were killed and the fourth managed to escape. The motives for all the attacks are yet unknown.
