Killing of student evokes protest in North Darfur

People in Birkat Seira in North Darfur demonstrated against the murder of a university student by a militiaman on Tuesday. Demonstrators reportedly torched the military group's headquarters.

University of Nyala student Fadul Harun Yousif, who studied at the fifth level of the Faculty of Engineering, was shot by a member of a paramilitary group in the market in Birkat Seira in Saraf Umra locality. The militiaman opened fire in the market at 3pm on Tuesday. Yousif was shot in the head and instantly killed.

A protester told Radio Dabanga yesterday that the name of the attacker is known. “People told the commander of the paramilitary group in the area, Mahmoud Ahmed, about the incident. But he refused to arrest the culprit and instead facilitated his escape.”

As a result people went out in a demonstration in Birkat Seira. The protester said that they torched the headquarters of the group.
