Inmate killed, others wounded in West Darfur prison

A clash between Ardamata prison inmates and guards in El Geneina, West Darfur, resulted in the death of one inmate on Wednesday. A witness told Radio Dabanga that “about a thousand prisoners demonstrated in protest of the prison’s administration around midday. Prison guards confronted the demonstration by firing live ammunition at the inmates.” Inmate Seif El Din Omar was killed, and two inmates were seriously injured. A prison guard called Sharoum Abdallah Suleiman was also wounded in the clash. The source further revealed that “the clash lasted for an hour in which the inmates used stones and crutches. “The administration makes the prisoners do hard work such as manufacturing bricks, and working as servants in the homes of officers and government officials”, he said. “They are fed only one meal a day, porridge.” File photo: Prison cell in Darfur (Albert González Farran/Unamid)
