Flash floods wiped away more than 650 houses in Haya locality, Red Sea state, last week.

“After heavy rains on Monday night, floods from the mountain tops swept through the villages of Teljereib, Shedyat, and parts of Haya,” a villager reported to Radio Dabanga from Haya on Sunday.

“More than 650 homes along the Haya-Atbara road were destroyed, and about 100 head of cattle drowned,” he said.

The affected families have not received any aid from the state or federal authorities thus far.

Dr El Fateh Rabee, director-general of the Red Sea Health Ministry, told reporters on Saturday that health teams are on their way to the affected areas in Haya.

“The damage was so big because the houses and other buildings in the area are very fragile,” he said.

Rabee called for more federal support, as Haya locality is in urgent need of vaccines, mosquito nets, pumps, and pesticides.
