‘Humanitarian disaster in Darfur’: Umma Party

The National Umma Party (NUP) has formally termed the situation in Darfur “a humanitarian disaster” and acknowledged that genocide is taking place in the western region of Sudan. In a press conference on Saturday concluding a NUP conference on Darfur, the NUP described the war in Darfur as a “tragedy and a crime perpetrated by the Omar Al Bashir regime, during which 600,000 people have been killed since war broke out in the region in 2003”. According to the NUP, “ousting of the current regime” is the only solution for the ongoing tragedy in Darfur. “President Al Bashir’s regime does not have the competence to resolve the problems in Darfur, since it is this regime that created it.” The NUP stated that “the regime has exhausted all reasons for its existence”.
