Gunmen kill teacher, student in Darfur

A teacher was shot dead in Hassahissa camp in Zalingei on Thursday night. In Nyala city, a university student was killed on Wednesday.

Three armed men, wearing military uniforms, opened fire on Abdelmajid Yunus, who is a teacher in the secondary school in Hassahissa. The coordinator of the Central Darfur camps for displaced people reported the killing to Radio Dabanga.

The gunmen shot him as Yunus returned from his farm in an area 3 kilometres east of Zalingei, during the night. He was killed on the spot.

According to the camp coordinator, Yunus also works as a security guard for the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (Unamid).

He explained that people in the area panicked after hearing about the murder of Yunus. Police forces traced the perpetrators but have not found them, and the motives for the killing remain unclear.

Nyala

In South Darfur's capital city Nyala, a student of the Technical Faculty was shot dead on the street by unknown gunmen on Wednesday evening. Ismail Yahya, the Commissioner of Nyala North, said that local authorities have not been able to arrest the perpetrators. The murder happened in El Salam neighbourhood.

On Saturday evening, a 18-year-old school student was shot in Zalingei, capital of Central Darfur, when two members of the security service open fire around them. The incident took place in the northern district of the capital, El Wehda.
