Gunmen free 2 inmates from Darfur prison, keep others inside

Three armed men stormed a South Darfur prison on Monday afternoon and released two inmates who were held under suspicion of killing the son of the region’s biggest gold trader last month. The gunmen, on foot, invaded Kass’ detention center at about 4:00pm and locked its guards in a cell. Next, they released their comrades but kept the other prisoners inside their booths, sources said.A group was waiting for the gunmen and former inmates east of the city. They fired shots in the air to celebrate the success of the operation before fleeing on horsebacks and camels.Eyewitnesses told Radio Dabanga that three government cars chased the gunmen to prevent them from escaping. The gunmen, on foot, invaded Kass’ detention center at about 4:00pm and locked its guards in a cell. Next, they released their comrades but kept the other prisoners inside their booths, sources said.
