Govt. forces raid West Darfur market for fake medicine

On Wednesday morning, government forces raided El Jizam market of El Geneina, capital of West Darfur. They beat the vendors, confiscated their goods, and arrested a number of them on charges of trading in expired and fake medicines. One of the market vendors told Radio Dabanga that a joint force of security and police forces in three vehicles raided the market in downtown El Geneina at 10 am on Wednesday. He appealed to the West Darfur state authorities to release the detainees, and return the confiscated goods, pointing out that the vendors have been working at El Jizam market for more than 50 years. Radio Dabanga reported on 4 December about an increase in mortality rate of malaria patients in West Darfur. The coordinator of the Sirba camps in the state said that this was caused by corrupt anti-malarial medicines being sold in the locality.
