Fistula centre opens in Nyala; South Darfur’s housing fund enters second phase

On Sunday, a centre for the treatment of fistulae was opened at the hospital of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, with the support of the UN and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). Dr Mohamed Kamal, the representative of UNFPA’s regional office, said that the results of the South Darfur survey of 2010 showed that the highest rate of maternal mortality was caused by fistula. Based on these figures, the Ministry of Health and UNFPA developed an effective strategy to reduce the deaths related to fistula, which resulted in the opening of the new centre at the Nyala hospital. Dr Lamia Khaled, representative of the Sudanese Federal Ministry of Health, expressed her hope that the centre will reduce maternal mortality and the suffering faced by the patients. Housing fund On Sunday too, Ghulam El Din Osman, Secretary General of the National Housing and Reconstruction Fund announced that during the second phase of the housing fund activities for South Darfur, 2000 housing units will be built. The costs will be SDG221 million ($38 million).
