Fire destroys five-family house in South Darfur’s Kalma camp

An extensive fire broke out on the morning of 19 November in Centre Five of the Kalma camp for the displaced in South Darfur. Spokesman for the Association of Displaced persons and Refugees of Darfur, Hussein Abu Sharati, said the fire destroyed an entire house in which five families were living. Due to the lack of water in the camp, the residents were not able to extinguish the fire in time. Sharati explained that a lot of fires break out during the dry seasons. “There is a lot of wind and most of the houses are built of straw, as we do not have tarpaulin to use for the shelters.” He called on humanitarian organisations to provide the camp residents with tarpaulins.
